Phenolic Compounds from Belamcanda chinensis Seeds

Abstract: Two new sucrose derivatives, namely, belamcanosides A (1) and B (2), together with five other known compounds (3−7), were isolated from the seeds of Belamcanda chinensis (L.) DC. Their structures were identified based on spectroscopic data. Especially, the absolute configurations of fructose and glucose residues in 1 and 2 were assigned by acid hydrolysis, followed by derivatization and gas chromatography (GC) analysis. Among the known compounds, (−)-hopeaphenol (3), (+)-syringaresinol (4), and quercetin (5), … Show more

“…Once squalene is generated, SQLE catalyzes its epoxidation to 2,3-oxidosqualene (squalene epoxide). This is the first reaction of the cholesterol-specific biosynthetic pathway; furthermore, SQLE is considered as one rate-limiting enzyme of this same pathway [ 31 , 40 ]. In light of this, FDFT1 and SQLE are looked upon as perspective molecular targets for the development of novel lowering cholesterol drugs [ 41 ].…”

“…B. chinensis is a traditional Chinese medicinal plant, belongs to the Iridaceae family and commonly found in northeast Asia region [ 60 , 61 ]. The biological activity of this plant include antitumor, antioxidant, antidiabetic, estrogen-like, hepatoprotective, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory [ 61 ]. It contains several bioactive compounds like flavonoids, terpenoids, organic acids, and quinones [ 62 ].…”

“…For this study, treatment with 9,10-PQ negatively affected steroid biosynthesis because all DEGs, including squalene epoxidase (SQLE), methylsterol monooxygenase 1 (MSMO1), CYP51A1, and 24-dehydrocholesterol reductase (DHCR24) (P Ͻ 0.05, Supplementary Table S3), were downregulated in the liver. SQLE is a rate-limiting enzyme that catalyzes the first reaction of cholesterol-specific biosynthesis (72) and a promising molecular target for the development of novel cholesterol-lowering drugs (77). MSMO1 is involved in the oxidation-reduction process and has been associated with metabolic disease in humans (23).…”
