Phenolic Compounds and Antioxidant Activity of Phalaenopsis Orchid Hybrids

Abstract: Phalaenopsis spp. is the most commercially and economically important orchid, but their plant parts are often left unused, which has caused environmental problems. To date, reports on phytochemical analyses were most available on endangered and medicinal orchids. The present study was conducted to determine the total phenolics, total flavonoids, and antioxidant activity of ethanol extracts prepared from leaves and roots of six commercial hybrid Phalaenopsis spp. Leaf extracts of “Chian Xen Queen” contained the… Show more

“…The total phenolic content assay was conducted using the Folin-Ciocalteu method as described in previous studies [28,29] with minor modifications. An aliquot of 200 µL of each sample (0.5 mg/L) was mixed 1.0 mL of a 10-fold diluted Folin-Ciocalteu's reagent in distilled water and 0.8 mL of 7.5 wt % aqueous sodium carbonate solution, respectively.…”

“…The phytochemical estimation reveals the presence of bioactive compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, phenols, terpenoids, and steroids. Based on the recent literature, the presence of bioactive compounds has been reported in few of the different parts of the orchid's species, namely, Coelogyne stricta [27], Dendrobium pandurantum [28], Vanda tessellata [29], Rhynchostylis retusa [30], C. aloifolium [31], Phalaenopsis [32], Luisia zeylanica [33], and Geodorum densiflorum [34]. Thus, the orchid plants have an abundant source of phytochemicals having important properties such as antioxidant activity.…”

“…Nevski were ordered 12.44 ± 0.20 (mM ascorbic acid g -1 ); 4.97 ± 0.48 (mg gallic acid g -1 ); 4.51 ± 0.29 (mg quarcetin g -1 ) respectively. Minh et al, (2016) investigated total phenolic and flavonoid contents and total antioxidant activity of Phalaenopsis orchid hybrids in their studies. The ethanol extracts of the leaves and roots of the hybrid Chien Xen Queen have the highest amount of total phenol with 11.52 ± 0.43 mg gallic acid aquavalent per g dry weight and the highest total flavonoid with 4.98 ± 0.27 mg rutin aquivalent per g dry weight.…”
