− An antimicrobial compound has been isolated from the leaves of Glochidion superbum. The compound was determined as methyl 3, 4, 5-trihydroxybenzoate (methyl gallate), based on ultraviolet (UV), infrared (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectroscopy (MS) analysis. The isolated compound exhibited potent antimicrobial activity against three clinical isolates of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) by qualitative agar disc diffusion method and quantitative broth dilution method. Agar disc diffusion was done in a dose-dependent manner for each bacterial isolate at disc potencies of 25, 50, 100, and 150 µg/disc. The zones of inhibition were on average equal to 12.27, 14.20, 15.43, and 24.17 mm respectively. The inhibition zones were compared with that of vancomycin disc at 30 µg as a reference standard. The MIC and MBC values were 50 µg/mL and 100 µg/mL respectively. The results of anti MRSA activity were analyzed using one-way ANOVA with Turkey's HSD and Duncan test. In conclusion, methyl gallate which was isolated from G. superbum showed the inhibition activity against methicillin resistant S. aureus.

The first reported phytochemical studies on two species of flowers in Australia enabled the identification of six secondary metabolites from Illawarra flame tree flower (Brachychiton acerifolius) and seven secondary metabolites from the flowers of the Alstonville (Tibouchina lepidota). Pelargonidin 3-(6-coumarylglucoside)-5-(6-acetylglucoside) was found to be responsible for the red colour of B. acerifolius, whereas malvidin 3-(coumarylglucoside)-5-(acetylxyloside) was responsible for the purple colour of (T. lepidota) flowers. (2S)-4,5-Dihydroxyflavanone 7-O-β-d-glucuronide methyl ester was isolated for the first time from B. acerifolius, and its absolute configuration was determined by circular dichroism spectroscopy. Some of the traditional uses of B. acerifolius could also be correlated with the known activity of the isolated metabolites. [2] However, there is limited information available pertaining to the phytochemical studies of Australian flowers.

Toona sinensis (TS) leaf is a well-known traditional oriental medicine herb. The purpose of this study was to evaluate in vitro antioxidant capability and performance assessment of White Roman goose supplemented with dried TS leaves (TSL). The TSL extracts contained 22.23 ± 1.13 mg gallic acid equivalent/g dry weight (DW) and 1.38 ± 0.06 mg quercetin equivalent/g DW of total phenolics and flavonoid contents. The scavenging action of 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl free radical and superoxide anion was as good as that of the butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and ascorbic acid, respectively. Inhibition of lipid peroxidation of TSL extracts at 2.5 mg/mL reached nearly 40% compared with the BHT. One hundred and eight White Roman geese aged 6 weeks were distributed to six pens randomly, and fed a grower diet ad libitum during the growing period, with each pen containing nine males and nine females following completely randomized design. Diets were supplemented with the following levels of dried TSL: 0% (control), 0.1% or 0.2% groups for 6 weeks, respectively. The results revealed no significant effects among treatments in the growth performance, blood biochemical parameters and muscle fibre of the grower geese. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) content of the serum in the 0.2% TSL group was significantly higher than that of the control group. In conclusion, dried TSL powder has antioxidative effects in vitro and could serve as a promising natural feed additive to improve the serum SOD content of grower geese. ARTICLE HISTORY
