Phenol-crotonaldehyde resins. 1. Synthesis and characterization of acid-catalyzed resins

Abstract: A new class of novolak type phenolic resins have been synthesized by acid-catalyzed condensation of phenol and crotonaldehyde. The thermoplastic powder resins have been characterized for their solubility, softening point, number-average molecular weight (MJ, and curing behavior. The resins were fractionated by thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and column chromatography. Infrared spectroscopic analysis indicates the inherent complexities in the structural features of the resins.
