Phenanthraquinone-Doped Polymethyl Methacrylate Photopolymer for Holographic Recording

Abstract: Phenanthraquinone-doped polymethyl methacrylate (PQ/PMMA) photopolymers are considered to be the most promising holographic storage media due to their unique properties, such as high stability, a simple preparation process, low price, and volumetric shrinkage. This paper reviews the development process of PQ/PMMA photopolymers from inception to the present, summarizes the process, and looks at the development potential of PQ/PMMA in practical applications.

“…Figure 3 shows the effect of different PQ contents on the diffraction efficiency of PQ/PMMA materials in strength holography. Under holographic recording light exposure, the PQ molecules in the bright region of the interference region will be consumed by rapid photoreaction to form photoproducts, and with the consumption of PQ molecules, concentration gradients and chemical potential differences will be formed [9]. Due to the limitation of the solubility of PQ in MMA solution, the content of PQ in MMA solution can reach up to 1wt%.…”

“…The main preparation methods of PQ/PMMA photopolymer materials include solvent common-method and thermopolymerization method [9], and this paper adopts the method of thermopolymerization, as shown in Figure 1.This method is characterized by the fact that during thermal polymerization, the monomer MMA molecules do not polymerize completely due to the control of the polymerization temperature, and approximately 10% of the monomer MMA remains free in the material [1]. Therefore, the remaining small part of the free monomer MMA molecules in the material will participate in the photochemical reaction during exposure, and the photoinitiator PQ molecules combine with the remaining monomer MMA molecules or substrate PMMA macromolecules under the action of light to form photoproducts, and photopolymerization reaction occurs, causing changes in refractive index modulation [1].…”

“…Based on the exposure response coefficient in tensor polarization holography [29] , we report a method to realize a bifocalpolarization holographic lens in a volume hologram. The PQ/PMMA (phenanthrenequinone-doped polymethyl methacrylate) polarization sensitive medium is used, the thickness is 1.5mm [30][31][32][33][34][35] . Two foci are generated by +1 diffracted order.…”
