Phellinotus, a new neotropical genus in the Hymenochaetaceae (Basidiomycota, Hymenochaetales)

Abstract: A new poroid genus with two conspicuous and common species growing on living Fabaceae trees is described from the Seasonally Dry Tropical Forests biome of Brazil. Both taxa in this forest pathogen genus resemble Phellinus rimosus macroscopically, but are distinguished by a dimitic hyphal system with skeletal hyphae present only in the trama of the tube layer while the context remains monomitic, and by the ellipsoid, thick-walled, adaxially flattened, yellow basidiospores that turn chestnut brown in KOH solutio… Show more

“…in previous studies carried out by Gomes-Silva et al (2015) and Costa-Rezende et al (2016) , supporting our proposition. Furthermore, hyphal system structure has been considered as a character to support the proposition of new genera among Agaricomycetes, especially polypores, such as in Perenniporiella , Yuchengia, Sanghuangporus , Tropicoporus and Phellinotus ( Decock & Ryvarden 2003 , Robledo et al 2009 , Zhao et al 2013 , Zhou et al 2015 , Drechsler-Santos et al 2016 ).…”

“…According to Giulietti et al (2004Giulietti et al ( , 2005, this domain is one of the greatest biological patrimonies in Brazil, bringing together an expressive number of rare and endemic taxa with ecological, cultural, and economic importance. Drechsler-Santos et al (2010), Gibertoni et al (2011), Baltazar et al (2012, Drechsler-Santos et al (2012a, b), Neves et al (2013), Drechsler-Santos et al (2013), Maia et al (2015), and Drechsler-Santos et al (2016) reported the occurrence of new polyporoid fungi taxa in some Caatinga regions.…”
