Phasor measurement units, WAMS, and their applications in protection and control of power systems

Abstract: The paper provides a short history of the phasor measurement unit (PMU) concept. The origin of PMU is traced to the work on developing computer based distance relay using symmetrical component theory. PMUs evolved from a portion of this relay architecture. The need for synchronization using global positioning system (GPS) is discussed, and the wide area measurement system (WAMS) utilizing PMU signals is described. A number of applications of this technology are discussed, and an account of WAMS activities in m… Show more

“…Currently, there are noticeable research activities in investigating the ability of WAMS in providing new tools for online assessment of power system reliability, monitoring, and security [172][173][174][175]. The main point that can be raised in this topic is improving the dynamic and static monitoring of power systems during the disturbance and maloperation situations.…”

“…In actual calculations, in order to verify the invariance of Δθmn/Pmn, the median of the first 1/10 of the data in time window (DTW) M1/10= median[Δθmn(1)/Pmn(1), Δθmn(2)/ Pmn (2), …, Δθmn(1/10*DTW)/ Pmn(1/10*DTW)] is set as the center of the normal domain, with M1/10+σh', M1/10-σh' as the upper and lower limits, forming the normal domain of the data. Furthermore, due to accidental excessive random noise, the value of Δθmn/Pmn may exceed the normal domain randomly, which would lead to invalid judgment.…”

“…Synchronous phasor measurement unit (PMU) and Wide Area Measurement System(WAMS), which can provide amplitude and phase angle measurements with highfrequency (up to 100Hz) and low delay [1] , has become an important means of dynamic monitoring in power systems. Based on the PMU/WAMS system, a series of advanced applications have been proposed [2][3] , such as state estimation [4] , parameter identification [5] , oscillation monitoring, stability monitoring, wide area protection [6][7][8][9] , fault detection [10] and location [11] etc.…”

“…As phasor measurement units and advanced communication facilities are widely used in power systems, it is possible to develop a fast-response and robust tool for dynamic state estimation. At present, the dynamic state estimation of land power system is mostly applied for the AC system and the optimal estimation of its linear ordinary differential equation [6] - [8]. In this system, when the load suddenly changes or the system is short-circuit, the dynamic change is small and slow compared with the scale of system capacity.…”
