Phase Structure and Mechanical Properties of Blends of Poly(ether imide) and Bisphenol A Polycarbonate

Abstract: Poly(ether imide) (PEI)/bisphenol A polycarbonate (PC) blends were obtained throughout the composition range both by direct injection moulding (DI blends) and by extrusion followed by injection moulding (PM blends). Although some reaction was observed by FT IR, the blends were fully phase separated at the detection level of DMTA. An anomalous decrease in the high temperature T g of the 90/10 and 80/20 blends, was only seen in PM blends. This was attributed to an anomalous thermodynamic behaviour, after rejecti… Show more

“…Modulus values near linearity are a common result in partially miscible blends such as some of those based on PEI. Thus, among the partially miscible PEI based blends, the moduli of those with either PET [14] or PAr [18] were slightly synergistic, those with PSU [20] were fully linear, and that based on PC [17] was slightly below additivity.…”

“…Other parameters such as Poisson's ratio or the thermal expansion coefficient, should have different effects when the nature of the matrix changes. [17,47] The fact that the behavior is similar in the whole composition range rules out any possible influence of these parameters. As both a decrease in orientation [48] and a decrease in mixing-induced free volume [46,48] should lead to ductility decreases and both of these are present in the blends, these parameters are proposed as being responsible for the observed ductility behavior.…”
