Phase-Shifting Common-Path Polarization Self-Interferometry for Evaluating the Reconstruction of Holograms Displayed on a Phase-Only Display

Abstract: In this work we apply a phase-shifting interferometry (PSI) to evaluate the reconstruction of complex-valued holograms displayed onto a phase-only spatial light modulator (SLM). The interferometer is vibration-free since it uses a common-path polarization arrangement based on the SLM itself, which is used simultaneously to display the hologram and to apply the phase-shifting values. The change from the hologram display configuration to the interferometer configuration involves only a rotation of a polarizer. T… Show more

“…In this case, the experimental interferograms show three bright and three dark lobes inside each of the two intensity rings. The bright and dark lobes are opposite from one ring to the other, as corresponds to the π-phase shift between them, and they progressively rotate as phase-shifts are added in successive interferograms [58] .…”

“…We have presented different examples of such phase grating designs with different constraints in several previous works [7,11,14,16]. Here, as an illustrative example, Table 1 presents two designs recently presented in [17]. The first one (Grating 1) is asymmetric with three target diffraction orders and , with relative intensities and phase shifts and of the second and negative first orders relative to the first order, , respectively.…”

“…In our previous work [14], this phase was simply compensated on the basis of the f value encoded. Here, this is quantitatively verified using the optimum phase triplicator grating [18], an analytical design defined by the continuous phase profile:…”

“…We have recently demonstrated a technique that exploits the LC-SLM to be used in a common-path interferometric arrangement [13], useful to evaluate the quality of the encoded complex-valued holograms [14]. In this work we apply it to analyze the response of complex-valued holograms displayed using the modified checkerboard grating encoding method [6][7][8].…”
