Phase shifter placement in large-scale systems via mixed integer linear programming

Abstract: This paper makes use of advances in mixed integer linear programming (MILP) to conduct a preliminary design study on the combinatorial optimal placement of thyristor controlled phase shifter transformers (TCPSTs) in large-scale power systems. The procedure finds the number, network location, and settings of phase shifters that maximize system loadability under the DC load flow model, subject to limits on the installation investment or total number of TCPSTs. It also accounts for active flow and generation limi… Show more

“…However, number of devices to be installed was assigned before optimization and installation cost was ignored (Gerbex et al, 2001). Mixed Integer Linear Programming was used to find optimum number, locations and setting of Thyristor Control Phase Shifting Transformer (TCPST) to optimize loadability and investment with respect to dc load flow model (Lima et al, 2003). Mixed Integer Non-linear programming was used for optimal location of FACTS to maximize social welfare based on multiple time periods.…”

“…In [14], by applying a mixed integer optimization technique, the demand response (DR) and the TCSC and SVC controllers are optimally coordinated with the conventional generators to manage the network congestion in a restructured market environment. In [15], mixed integer linear programming (MILP) is used to the optimal allocation of thyristor controlled phase shifter transformers (TCPSTs) for maximizing power system loadability. Mixed integer linear and nonlinear programming-based optimal power flow (OPF) methods have been utilized for finding the optimal installation of FACTS to enhance system loadability [16,17].…”

“…These include the linear programming (Lima et al, 2003;Tuaimah and Meteb,2014), gradient method (Salgado et al, 2002), interior point (IP) method (Capitanescua and Wehenkel, 2013) and Newton method (Tinneyand Hart, 1967). The inequality constraints add complexity in dealing with gradient and Newton methods.…”
