Phase retardation measurement of retinal nerve fiber layer by polarization-sensitive spectral-domain optical coherence tomography and scanning laser polarimetry

Abstract: Phase retardation of in vivo human retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) is quantitatively measured by two methods--polarization-sensitive spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (PS-SD-OCT) and scanning laser polarimetry (SLP). An en face cumulative phase retardation map is calculated from the three-dimensional (3-D) phase retardation volume of healthy and glaucomatous eyes measured by PS-SD-OCT. It is shown that the phase retardation curves around the optic nerve head measured by PS-SD-OCT and SLP have simil… Show more

“…As can be seen, not just the retardation and thickness, but also the birefringence varies as a function of position, ranging from ~0.07 to 0.14°/µm on average. For a wavelength of 840 nm, this corresponds to a dimensionless birefringence Δn of 1.6 -3.3·10 −4 which is in the range of RNFL birefringence values reported in other studies [104,108,109]. (Fig.…”

“…PS-OCT can avoid these problems. Retardation and birefringence measurement and imaging of the RNFL were among the first applications of PS-OCT in the eye [65, [103][104][105][106][107][108][109]. Figure 13 shows an example of PS-OCT retardation imaging in the optic nerve head (ONH) region.…”

“…Polarization-sensitive OCT (PS-OCT), which is one of the functional extensions of OCT, can improve the image contrast of OCT by imaging birefringence of biological fibrous tissues [4]. PS-OCT has been demonstrated to discriminate between ocular tissues using their birefringence properties in studies on the posterior segment of the eye, retinal nerve fiber [5,6] and scar tissue in age-related macular degeneration [7,8]. Simultaneous polarization scrambling measurements discriminated the retinal pigment epithelium from other structures [7,9].…”
