Phase Relations in the System Li2O.B2O3‐B2O3‐NiO

Abstract: Phase equilibria were determined by standard quench methods in binary systems NIO-B208, the binary join Li,O.B,O,-NiO, and three other sections through the Liz0.Bz03-B20a-Ni0 system. The only new compound observed was 2Ni0.B,03, which is stable from 1303" to 1480°C.

“…Ni-Ni 3 B(Ni-24.5 mol pct B), Ni 3 B-Ni 2 B(Ni-30 mol pct B), Ni 2 B-o-Ni 4 B 3 (Ni-39.5 mol pct B), o-Ni 4 B 3 -m-Ni 4 B 3 (Ni-42.5 mol pct B), and m-Ni 4 B 3 -NiB(Ni-45.3 mol pct B) two-phase alloys were prepared by arc melting the compressed compacts of the mixtures of Ni and B powders with a tungsten electrode in an argon atmosphere, crushed in an iron mortar, and then finely powdered in an alumina mortar with an alumina pestle. [13] The pure Ni 3 B 2 O 6 was mixed with Ni and B 2 O 3 in a given ratio and used as an electrode material of the cell. Ni 3 B 2 O 6 was prepared from (CH 3 COO) 2 Ni and H 3 BO 3 .…”

“…Thus, we have determined the standard Gibbs energies of formation of the Ni-B-O ternary system, which is a fundamental system of Ni-B-Mo-O system, including the binary Ni-B system. There are following alloys and compounds in the Ni-B-O system: Ni 3 B, Ni 2 B, o-Ni 4 B 3 (Ni 0.586 B 0.414 ), m-Ni 4 B 3 (Ni 0.564 B 0.436 ), and NiB in the Ni-B binary system as shown in the phase diagram [8,9], NiO in the Ni-O binary system, B 2 O 3 in the B-O binary system, and Ni 3 B 2 O 6 and Ni 2 B 2 O 5 in the Ni-B-O ternary system [10]. Ni 3 B 2 O 6 is an incongruently melting compound and present below 1612 ± 5 K while Ni 2 B 2 O 5 is present over 1576 ± 5 K [10].…”
