Phase-Lock Loop Design for Coherent Angle-Error Detection in the Telstar Satellite Tracking System

Abstract: The function of the angle‐error detector is to provide pointing‐error signals to the ground antenna control system, which allows operation in the autotrack mode once the satellite beacon has been acquired. The limitations on the accuracy of this system imposed by noise, phase jitter and Doppler effects are evaluated, and the optimum design in terms of minimum mean‐square error is developed. Design examples are given for both the horn‐reflector antenna autotrack system and the precision tracker antenna system.
