Phase Field Simulation of Equiaxed Microstructure Formation during Semi-solid Processing of A380 Al Alloy

Abstract: A phase field modelling approach is implemented in the present study towards simulation of microstructure evolution during cooling slope semi solid slurry generation process of A380 Aluminium alloy. First, experiments are performed to evaluate the number of seeds required within the simulation domain to simulate near spherical microstructure formation, occurs during cooling slope processing of the melt. Subsequently, microstructure evolution is studied employing a phase field method. Simulations are performed … Show more

“…The temperature gradient and the concentration gradient of the slurry state decrease in the serpentine channel by means of self-stirring [21]. Similar simplified methods for slurry formation have been developed, such as the cooling slope [24][25][26], the cooling channel [27], and the ultrasonic treatment (UST) [28].…”

“…¾ The developed 2D PF model deals with the anisotropic interfacial properties, which are described here via a vector which is normal to the solid-liquid as well as solid-solid interface . The anisotropic functions considered here in case of Face centered cubic (FCC) α-Al [17][18][19][20] and primary Mg2Si [23][24] grains are depicted below.…”

“…There is no literature available on mesoscopic simulation of microstructure formation of the above mentioned composite, at the best of authors knowledge on the topic. Earlier work on phase filed modelling of slurry microstructure formation, in case of cooling slope processing, were focused on Al-Cu [17] and Al-Si alloys [18][19][20]. The present study is taken up to bridge the above gap.…”
