Phase equilibria testing of a multiple pulse mechanism for origin of mafic–ultramafic intrusions: a case example of the Shiant Isles Main Sill, NW Scotland

Abstract: In this paper we examine the role of multiple emplacement of sills into partly solidified rocks (an intrusive mechanism 'liquid into solid') as a possible explanation for some textural and compositional 'anomalies' of single-cyclic mafic intrusions. As a case study we used the Shiant Isles Main Sill that is widely regarded as a classical example of a multiple, picrite-picrodolerite-crinanite alkaline sill. This sill is currently interpreted as having been formed by several olivine phenocrystrich pulses of magm… Show more

“…The Shiant Isles Main sill is the most studied intrusion of the Little Minch Sill Complex (Gibb & Henderson, 1984, 1996, 2006Gibb & Gibson, 1989;Foland et al, 2000;Latypov & Chistyakova, 2009;Latypov, 2014;Holness et al, 2017a) and is thought to have been fed via the Minch Fault (Fig. 1; Fyfe et al, 2021).…”

“…As an example, one can mention $20 mafic sills with trace amounts of interstitial nepheline [e.g. Shiant Isles Main Sill belonging to the Little Minch Sill Complex of northern Skye (Gibb & Gibson, 1989;Gibb & Henderson, 2006;Latypov & Chistyakova, 2009)]. Another case is when parental magmas of olivine basalt composition are located directly in the plane of silica undersaturation Ol^Cpx^Pl.…”

“…Schematic illustration of two contrasting models for the origin of layered mafic^ultramafic intrusions: (a) the classical model that implies 'single pulse' magma emplacement followed by fractional crystallization with formation of a single-cyclic layered intrusion; by 'single pulse', is meant that the intrusion crystallizes from a single large body of homogeneous magma produced by complete mixing of numerous small magma pulses in the chamber prior to onset of crystallization; (b) the 'no phenocrysts, no post-emplacement differentiation' model that implies multiple emplacement of phenocryst-laden magma pulses (one pulse per layer) forming a single-cyclic layered intrusion. Modified after Latypov & Chistyakova (2009).
