Liquid-liquid two-phase systems formed by a hydrophobic ionic liquid and water find several useful ways of application in analytical chemistry. One of the most important properties of such two-phase systems is the mutual solubility of the IL and water. Recent advancements on this subject have been reviewed. The solubility of ionic liquids in water is related to the standard Gibbs energies of the transfer of ions constituting the ionic liquid from the ionic liquid phase to water. Although this single ionic property cannot be measured thermodynamically and also varies from one ionic liquid to another, the standard Gibbs energy of the ion transfer from a polar aprotic solvent, such as nitrobenzene and 1,2-dichloroethane, to water is a convenient measure for it. The solubility of an ionic liquid in water and the electrochemical properties at the interface between the two phases are intimately related with each other.

The spectroscopic characteristics (excitation, emission and lifetime) of EuIII dissolved in 1‐methyl‐3‐butylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfon)imide (BumimTf2N) are reported. In a first series of experiments, the effect of the presence of water in BumimTf2N was examined. It appears that non‐degassed solutions are most probably inhomogeneous, displaying large water clusters leading to an intense diffusion of the red light of an He:Ne laser. In these samples, the Eu emission spectrum is close to that observed in slightly acidic aqueous solutions. In contrast, when the samples were degassed the solution appeared homogeneous and water can be considered as a competitive ligand for the first coordination sphere of Eu. In a subsequent series of experiments, tetrabutylammonium chloride (TBACl) was added to the solution and the resultant species investigated. The ensuing enhancement in the metal‐centered luminescence has been interpreted in terms of changes in the inner coordination sphere of the EuIII ion and possible structures are discussed. Summary: Radiation‐induced polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in ethanol (EtOH) and N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF) in the presence of ionic liquid [Me3NC2H4OH]+[ZnCl3]− is reported. A substantial increase in monomer conversion and molecular weight is observed at room‐temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) >60 vol.‐%, and the resulting PMMA has a broad multimodal MWD. A clear difference in the MWD pattern is noted between EtOH/RTIL and DMF/RTIL systems, probably due to the complicated interactions between the solvent and ionic liquid.Gel permeation chromatography traces of poly(methyl methacrylate) obtained by radiation polymerization in EtOH/RTIL and DMF/RTIL mixed solvent.
