“…Actuellement, la granulovélocimétrie phase-Doppler est la technique la plus performante pour mesurer ces quantités. Introduite par le Professeur F. Durst en 1975 [1], cette extension de la vélocimétrie laser-Doppler ne connut un réel développe-ment qu'à partir de 1984 [2,3]. Une introduction à la technique phase-Doppler est donnée dans [4].…”

“…1) in the forward scatter direction. This gives a linear relationship between the phase diflerence and the diameter of the scattering bubble, as calculated from analytical modeling using the Lorenz-Mie theory (Bachalo and Houser, 1984;Breña de la Rosa et al, 1989, 1990Sankar and Bachalo, 1991). In all the cases presented here the measurements were taken at 20 nozzle diameters, 10 diameters downstream from the air injection point.…”

“…Although the sizing accuracy of the technique has been verified for measuring large droplets (e.g., Bachalo and Houser, 1984), the ability of a phase Doppler system to accurately size par- ticles down to its lower detection limit (< 1 pm) has not been proven. The sizing accuracy of the PDPA at small sizes is of considerable interest, inasmuch as the technique would provide a valuable tool for basic aerosol and fluid dynamic research, especially in areas such as turbulent fluid-particle interaction, inhalation toxicology, and atmospheric research.…”

“…Phase Doppler instruments can be operated in either a forward scattered mode (refraction dominated) or a back scattered mode (reflection dominated). A linear relationship between the phase difference of the scattered light and the particle diameter has been shown for large particles using both geometrical optics (Bachalo and Houser, 1984) and Mie scattering theory (Saffman et al, 1984). Thus, by measuring the extent of the phase difference between photodetectors one can infer the particle size.…”
