Phase Coherence Imaging for Near-Surface Defects in Rails Using Cross-Correlation of Ultrasonic Diffuse Fields

Abstract: In this paper, phase coherence imaging is proposed to improve spatial resolution and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of near-surface defects in rails using cross-correlation of ultrasonic diffuse fields. The direct signals acquired by the phased array are often obscured by nonlinear effects. Thus, the output image processed by conventional post-processing algorithms, like total focus method (TFM), has a blind zone close to the array. To overcome this problem, the diffuse fields, which contain spatial phase correla… Show more

“…By using signal correlation, some problem in classical ultrasonic C-scan testing such as signal peak tracking and complex gate setting can be avoided. As a classical signal processing method, signal correlation processing has been also applied to the processing of ultrasonic signals [ 35 , 36 , 37 ]. In the work by Kawamura et al [ 38 ], in order to investigate the depth of boulder penetration, autocorrelation was used to identify the time tag of the reflection wave in acoustic emission (AE).…”

“…Various extensions have been developed to increase the effectiveness of the TFM algorithm. A particularly effective one is the SCF, which takes into account the sign of the received signals [19,41]. This is defined as…”

“…Therefore, in the field of image processing, the processing methods that depend on data amplitude information are insufficient. Phase coherent imaging (PCI) in image processing mode has been applied to other fields by other scholars due to its excellent performance [18][19][20][21][22][23]. Qu Lele et al [19] used the two-dimensional phase coherence factor weighted radar imaging method to effectively suppress the clutter interference in radar imaging and improve the imaging resolution.…”
