Phase Angle Is Moderately Associated With Muscle Quality and Functional Capacity, Independent of Age and Body Composition in Older Women

Abstract: Our findings suggest that healthy elderly women with higher values of PhA have a better muscle quality and functionality, regardless of age and body composition.

“…The critical frequency is the frequency at which the largest reactance and cell membrane capacitance is observed and the one closest linked to function and outcomes. 42,43 In support of phase angle as a surrogate measure of muscle quality and consistent with the overall results of the current study, Tomeleri et al 44 recently reported significant associations between phase angle, muscle quality, and functional capacity in a cohort of elderly women. The authors defined muscle 'quality' as total strength per unit muscle mass, specifically as 1-repetition max tests (chest press, knee extension, and preacher curl exercises)/LST.…”

“…Impedance consists of two variables: resistance (R), that determines the state of hydration of the tissue, and reactance (Xc), that determines the amount of energy that can be accumulated in the tissue (12). The phase angle (PhA), which is a relation between Xc and R, has been interpreted as an indicator of cell membrane integrity, in addition to associating muscle mass, strength and body fat (13)(14)(15). PhA decreases with the aging process, especially due to the reduction of Xc, and and is related to the reduction of the proportion of total body water (12) and of the relationship between extracellular and intracellular water (16,17).…”
