Phase-Adaptive Superresolution of Mammographic Images Using Complex Wavelets

Abstract: Abstract-This paper describes a new superresolution approach for enhancing the resolution of mammographic images using complex wavelet frequency information. This method allows regions of interest of a mammographic image to be viewed in enhanced resolution while reducing the patient exposure to radiation. The proposed method exploits the structural characteristics of breast tissues being imaged, and produces higher resolution mammographic images with sufficient visual fidelity that fine image details can be di… Show more

“…Local phase information of a patch pfalse(x,yfalse) at a scale c and orientation θ is described in (20) normalΦp(x,y)false(c,θfalse)=tan1)(pfalse(x,yfalse)fcefalse(θfalse)pfalse(x,yfalse)fcofalse(θfalse) where false(fcefalse(θfalse),fcofalse(θfalse)false) are pair of even‐symmetric and odd‐symmetric Log‐Gabor wavelets [31] at scale c and orientation θ.…”

“…There are many methods of resolution enhancement, some of them are also called super resolution methods [26][27][28]. However, most of them introduce external information, noise and artifacts, in general coming from the averaging criteria of these methods, limiting the microcalcification identification.…”

“…Robinson et al [2] used multi-frame image reconstruction to produce high-resolution mammograms beyond the native resolution of a digital image sensor by way of accurate sub-pixel registration of aliased images. Several other image enhancement techniques have been proposed for this problem [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8]; however, improvements have been modest.…”
