Pharyngo-laryngeal discomfort after breast surgery: Comparison between orotracheal intubation and laryngeal mask

Abstract: Sore throat and dysphonia are a significant source of postoperative discomfort for patients scheduled for breast surgery who have been intubated for general anaesthesia. The aim of this study was to compare the incidence of postoperative pharyngo-laryngeal pain and dysphonia in the use of the laryngeal mask airway (LMA) or tracheal intubation in these patients. In a prospective, double-blind, randomised clinical trial we studied 53 women undergoing elective breast surgery to test the hypothesis that the use of… Show more

“…Similarly, Radu et al compared ETT and LMA use in breast surgery patients and found incidences of sore throat at the 6 th postoperative hour to be significantly higher with the ETT [30]. In contrast, in our study, sore throat complaints were significantly lower in the LMA-S group at the 2 nd , 6 th , and 12 th postoperative hours (p = 0.003, p = 0.017 and p < 0.001, respectively).…”

“…Subsequently, the surgical procedure was performed during general anesthesia (with a single dose of 15 µg/kg of alfentanil for endotracheal intubation) or (without any opioids) using a Laryngeal Mask Airway [20] to provide patient comfort and immobilized surgical conditions in the beach chair position. By the end of the operation, one single dose of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug metamizole (15 mg/kg) was administered.…”

“…The frequency of respiratory complications is generally lower with LMA compared with ETT. 24 The minor laryngopharyngeal morbidity is similar to that in ETT, but cough and hoarseness are less common in LMA. In our study, all airway complications were more prevalent in the ETT group.…”
