PHAROS—PHysical Assistant RObot System

Abstract: The great demographic change leading to an ageing society demands technological solutions to satisfy the increasing varied elderly needs. This paper presents PHAROS, an interactive robot system that recommends and monitors physical exercises designed for the elderly. The aim of PHAROS is to be a friendly elderly companion that periodically suggests personalised physical activities, promoting healthy living and active ageing. Here, it is presented the PHAROS architecture, components and experimental results. Th… Show more

“…Another proposal is PHAROS [30,31], a socially assistive robot that monitors and evaluates the daily physical exercise done at the user's home (see Figure 1). For this, machine learning techniques (i.e., a convolutional neural network (CNN) together with a recurrent neural network (RNN)) are used to properly identify and evaluate the exercise performance.…”

“…All studies use interactive robots manufactured in Germany, Japan, and the United States, as shown in Figure 10. Only the PR2 robot is being used in the same country [56], while Care-O-bot3 is used on collaboration between Portugal and Spain [57], and Pepper is used in the UK [58] (see Table 7).…”

“…One example of this is the PHAROS [15] project, whose goal is to use a friendly-looking robot to engage elderly people in playful activities, such as physical exercises or cognitive games. The aim is to maintain a conversation that subliminally engages the users to perform the system's suggestions.…”
