Pharmacotherapy of cough-variant asthma

Abstract: Cough-variant asthma is considered as an asthma subset in which chronic cough is the only symptom. It is believed to be more frequent and, hence, sometimes overdiagnosed in children, and shares with typical asthma eosinophilic airway inflammation and consequent bronchial hyper-responsiveness. Presently available therapies consist of bronchodilators, inhaled or oral corticosteroids, or leukotriene modifiers. However, the long-term efficacy of these agents in adults and children is not known. This review focuses… Show more

“…In China, CVA is the most common cause of clinical chronic cough (32.6%), and it is also the leading cause of chronic cough in children, which seriously affects people’s daily life 5 7 . The current combined treatment of western medicine can alleviate the seasonal onset of CVA patients to a certain extent, relieve airway spasm and control airway inflammatory reaction 8 . In adults with CVA, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal medicine results in improved cough frequency and severity scores compared with western medicine Montelukast 9 .…”

“…The latter include cysteinil-leukotriene antagonists and inhaled corticosteroids, which are given regularly alone or combined. The leukotriene antagonists, such as montelukast, can be used as a stand-alone maintenance therapy, especially in patients with milder asthma, in variant forms of asthma, in asthma with aspirin sensitivity or in exercise-induced bronchospasm [3]. Desloratadine is an antihistamine compound that has been tested for its effectiveness on early asthma reaction alone and combined with montelukast [2].…”
