Pharmacotherapy of acute and chronic hearing loss

Abstract: The aetiology of acute hearing loss is mostly idiopathic like sudden sensorineural hearing loss and rarely infectious or vascular. Several studies and meta-analyses of pharmacotherapy are reviewed: In chronic tinnitus there is no indication for pharmacotherapy; sometimes a possible psychosomatic comorbidity has to be treated with psychopharmaceutical agents. Despite a low level of evidence treatment with steroids and initially plasma expanding infusions is recommended for acute tinnitus if there is no spontane… Show more

“…In case of acute tinnitus manifestation, existing treatment options may be considered unsatisfactory. On the one hand, several pharmacological approaches (Patterson and Balough, 2006 ) have been established considering tinnitus to be equivalent to sudden sensorineural hearing loss (Hesse and Laubert, 2010 ) or to any cochlear damage (Shim et al, 2011 ). However, none of these treatment methods have proven to be effective after replication in controlled trials (Elgoyhen and Langguth, 2011 ).…”

“…A number of therapy options have been developed for tinnitus treatment, comprising Tinnitus Retraining Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Progressive Tinnitus Management, Biofeedback, Education, and Relaxation Therapies (Herraiz et al, 2007 ; Hesse and Laubert, 2010 ; Hesser et al, 2011 ; Folmer et al, 2014 ; Grewal et al, 2014 ; Myers et al, 2014 ). Most therapies aim to dissuade patients auditory self-monitoring.…”

“…Its prevalence rate is estimated to be about 10% to 15% of the general population (Hall et al, 2011). In Germany, about three million people suffer from tinnitus, and this number is rising by 235,000 annually (Hesse & Laubert, 2010).…”

“…To date, there are several treatment options for patients with recent-onset tinnitus. Pharmacological approaches have been established equating tinnitus with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (Hesse & Laubert, 2010) or with any cochlear damage (Shim, Song, Choi, Lee, & Yoon, 2011). However, none of these treatment modalities has yet shown repeated efficacy in controlled trials (Elgoyhen & Langguth, 2011).…”
