Pharmacological screening of some Brazilian plants

Abstract: Forty‐five species of plants from several botanical families growing in North East Brazil have been examined for toxicity on mice and small fishes, cat blood pressure and respiration, isolated toad heart and rectus abdominis muscle, guinea‐pig ileum, rabbit duodenum and rat uterus. A high toxicity to mice and fishes was exhibited by aqueous (A) and ethanolic (B) extracts from Luffa operculata, Peschiera affinis, Pithecelobium multiflorum (gall) and Zizyphus joazeiro and by extract B from Pithecelobium multiflo… Show more

“…These results indicated that the crude extract of Z. hyemale acted as a non-competitive antagonist of contractions induced by Ach and BaCl 2 . An antispasmodic activity (on rabbit duodenum) was also verified for the crude ethanolic and aqueous extract of Z. rhoifolium [3]. Compound 4 increased pD 2 of BaCl 2 -induced contraction and lupeol increased pD 2 of cumulative concentration-response curves of Ach.…”

“…It has been used in Brazilian folk medicine as a potent antithermic, antispasmodic, astringent, and tonic agent [2]. Previous studies on the crude extract of Z. rhoifolium (Rutaceae) reported the reduction of the activity of the intestinal smooth muscle [3]. As a continuation of our chemical studies on plants of the Rutaceae's family [4], [5], the analysis of the chemical constituents ( Fig.…”

“…Atividades biológicas: Um estudo realizado com a casca da raiz registrou forte atividade estimulante em útero de ratas (Barros et al, 1970). Estudos realizados por Bolzani et al (1996Bolzani et al ( , 1997 com os iridóides (ferulato de 11-O-trans-teucreína e α e β-gardiol) isolados dos ramos e folhas, apresentaram atividade antifúngica contra Cladosporium cladosporioides.…”

“…Matos and Gottlieb (1967) isolated and identified the active component as isocucurbitacin B. Several activities as decongestant, hemolytic, purgative and abortifacient have been attributed to this plant (Le Cointe 1947, Silva 1964, Barros et al 1970. Its effect on Allium cepa root tip cells has been recently studied by Medeiros and Takahashi (1987).…”
