Background: Mangifera indica L.; the largest fruit-tree found in India, is an important component of indigenous medical systems. Mangifera indica L. leaves (MIL) have been reported to possess various biological activities and thus, can be a useful source of substances for drug development. Although the leaves have been traditionally used as antibacterial and immunomodulatory agent, there is a paucity of scientific data in support of their efficacy. The purpose of this study was an in-depth evaluation of antimycobacterial and immunomodulatory activity of a standardized extract of MIL. Material and Methods: The hexane extract of Mangifera indica L. leaves (HEMIL) was prepared and standardized. Chromatographic characterization of HEMIL was done using validated HPLC and GC-MS/MS technique. HEMIL was evaluated for antimycobacterial and immunomodulatory activity by using various in vitro and in vivo assays. Results and Discussion: HEMIL showed lupeol and stigmasterol content of 21.04 ± 0.03 mg/g and 16.99 ± 0.04 mg/g, respectively; and total terpenoids content of 112.55 ± 2.16 mg LE/g. GC-MS/MS characterization of the extract confirmed the presence of lupeol and stigmasterol and revealed five other phytochemical constituents. The safety of HEMIL was established in vitro and in vivo. HEMIL showed concentration-dependent inhibition of MTB as evident in REMA and radiorespirometry. HEMIL was also found efficacious in immunomodulatory evaluations using RAW 264.7 cells, human PBMCs, cyclophosphamide induced myelosuppressed mice and SRBCs stimulated mice. Conclusion: The promising results not only support the traditional claim of MIL as antibacterial and immunomodulatory agent but also provide data on their use in food supplements for immuno-pharmacological use.

In order to classify typical Chinese tea varieties, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) of tea polysaccharides (TPS) was used as an accurate and economical method. Partial least squares (PLS) modeling method along with a self-organizing map (SOM) neural network method was utilized due to the diversity and heterozygosis between teas. FTIR spectra results of tea extracts after spectra preprocessing were used as input data for PLS and SOM multivariate statistical analyses respectively. The predicted correlation coefficient of optimization PLS model was 0.9994, and root mean square error of calibration and cross-validation (RMSECV) was 0.03285. The features of PLS can be visualized in principal component (PC) space, contributing to discover correlation between different classes of spectra samples. After that, a data matrix consisted of the scores on the selected 3PCs computed by principle component analysis (PCA) and the characteristic spectrum data was used as inputs for training of SOM neural network. Compared with the PLS linear technique's recognition rate of 67% only, the correct recognition rate of the PLS-SOM as a non-linear classification algorithm to differentiate types of tea reaches up to 100%. And the models become reliable and provide a reasonable clustering of tea varieties.

This work aims to determine antioxidant, total phenolic content and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis of breadfruit leaves which are essential in management of diabetes. The methanolic extracts of breadfruit leaves was used to analyze for total phenolic content and antioxidant. Total phenolic content of the extracts was measured using the Folin–Ciocalteu assay while the antioxidant activity of plant extracts was measured by the 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryhyradrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay. FTIR analysis was used to determine the chemical components in the leaves. Total phenolic content in fresh breadfruit leaves (144.16 mg/g ± 17.98) was comparable to those of green tea. The results showed the breadfruit leaves extracts exhibited potent antioxidant activity. The presence of OH group also suggests antioxidant capacity of breadfruit leaves to deactivate free radicals as glucose itself could react with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of iron and copper ions to form hydroxyl radical.
