Pharmacognostic Studies on Millingtonia Hortensis L.

Abstract

The earth is home to a rich and diversity assemblage of living organisms. Natural plant products play a dominant role in the development of novel drug leads for the treatment and prevention of diseases. The phytochemical screening and qualitative estimation of Millingtonia hortensis showed that the leaves were richin steroids, terpenoids, fatty acids, tannins, saponins, anthocyanins, coumarins and emodins. Sulphated ash was higher than the total ash, acid insoluble ash and water soluble ash. The information obtained from the present study is useful during the time of collection and also during extraction process. Using thesestandards, the plant can be differentiated from other related species. This study will contribute to the existing knowledge over the standardization aspects of the raw drug M. hortensis.
