Pharmacogenetics of escitalopram and mental adaptation to cancer in palliative care: Report of 18 cases

Abstract: The results of this study indicate that the use of SSRI antidepressants is effective in the palliative care of cancer patients, and their action affects not only depression but also the patients' mental adaptation to the disease. These results encourage further examination of these drugs in a larger cohort of patients. The significant contribution of pharmacogenetics indicates the possibility of personalized treatment with SSRIs in palliative care.

“…Hope and optimism have been negatively correlated to cancer patients' level of anxiety and depression [29,30]. In our study there was a parallel change in the levels of anxious and depressive symptoms and in the adaptation to cancer disease, with major reduction in the Helpless-Hopeless and Anxious Preoccupations dimensions and a significant increase of the Fighting Spirit component that we consider related to a better adherence to cancer treatment as described by others [31].…”

“…Nonetheless, beneficial outcomes in older patients have been established 39 . In addition, small cohort studies of selective serotonin RUI have shown significant improvement in depression and mental adaptation to cancer diagnosis 40 ,. 41 Use of antidepressants among cancer patients varies significantly and depends on cancer site, but we found slightly increased rates in comparison to previous US study that reported 19% antidepressant use in non‐specific cancer patients 42 .…”

“…In the same context, Schillani et al reported that the use of SSRIs could be effective in palliative care of patients with cancer. It not only relieves depression symptoms but also improves mental adaptation to cancer (18).…”
