“…This finding is consistent with a previous study conducted by Segal, Wantz and Brusadin (1989) which found that 35% of the pharmacists surveyed used product bonus as a measure to stock the appropriate brands of generic pharmaceuticals for maximising their pharmacy profits. “…Keeping generic drugs in stock in addition to brand name drugs would increase the stock burden for a small pharmacy. Generic medicine stocks in pharmacies may be limited to generic drugs whose turnover rates of originator drugs were high, as shown in a previous study reported where the therapeutic class of the brand name drugs and the turnover rate was reported to influence pharmacists' decisions to stock generic pharmaceuticals (Segal et al 1989). Especially in the current transition period where generic dispensing is not common, some kind of measure to minimize the burden of keeping stock in a pharmacy should be implemented, taking into consideration the experiences of stock issues in other countries.…”

“…13 In the same year, but in a different state (Ohio, US), Segal et al investigated the criteria that infl uence pharmacists ' decisions to stock generic pharmaceuticals in pharmacies and criteria that infl uence pharmacists ' decisions to recommend generic pharmaceuticals to patients. 15 Data were collected using a mail questionnaire to a random sample of independent community pharmacies; the researchers were able to collect 298 responses, giving a 59 per cent response rate. The results indicate that four of the fi ve dimensions studied affected independent community pharmacists ' decisions to stock generic products in pharmacies.…”

“…Two methods are mentioned in the literature: one looks at the offi cial documents of the drug regulation authority in the country (The Orange book in the case of the FDA); the other is to know the company manufacturing and distributing the generic product (reputation of the manufacturer and / or distributor). 15 It is agreed between pharmacists that generic drugs should be bioequivalent to their branded counterparts. The fear of using drugs that are not bioequivalent is the most infl uential risk that pharmacists reported to perceive in more than one study.…”
