Contamination by emerging contaminants of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) has been a matter of global concern due to increasing their occurrence in the environment and their potential toxic effect. Despite the increasing number of publications on PPCPs in aquatic environments worldwide, only very few data are available in Indonesia. This study aims to determine PPCPs in the surface water of Jakarta Bay to understand their occurrence and distribution. Surface water was collected from 17 stations in September 2018. Samples were analyzed for 74 compounds of PPCPs using Ultra-fast Liquid Chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. In general, among PPCPs analyzed, 20 compounds occur in seawater from Jakarta Bay, of which 15 PPCPs were detected in 50% of the sampling stations. Among PPCPs detected, N,N-diethyl-3-toluamide (DEET), Ibuprofen, O-desmethyl tramadol, Mefenamic acid, Sulfamethoxazole and Tramadol were the predominant with mean and range concentrations of 51(nd-170), 6.9(nd-22), 6.5(nd-31), 4.8(nd-13), 2.2(nd-6.1), and 131.9(nd-4.8) ng/l, respectively. Whereas the other PPCPs were one or more orders of magnitude lower. Generally, concentrations of PPCPs were higher in the inner bay than outer bays. Another study from freshwater rivers which flow to Jakarta Bay showed a high concentration of DEET indicating that the environment was an essential source of PPCPs.

BACKGROUND The increasing presence of contaminants of emerging concern, including pharmaceuticals, in the environment creates an urgent need for development of efficient technologies of water treatment. A promising solution could be the application of hybrid systems combining advanced oxidation processes and membrane technology. The presented investigations were focused on the treatment of simulated surface water contaminated with ketoprofen in a submerged photocatalytic membrane reactor utilizing direct contact membrane distillation (SPMR‐DCMD). The influence of operational parameters such as TiO2 photocatalyst concentration, feed temperature and aeration rate was examined. Moreover, the long‐term performance of the polypropylene membrane in the SPMR‐DCMD was evaluated. RESULTS It was proved that the increase in feed temperature not only improved the permeate flux but also enhanced the degradation efficiency, despite a simultaneous decrease in dissolved oxygen concentration. Aeration of feed did not improve the photodegradation rate, but enhanced the product quality, especially with reference to removal of CO2, thus reducing the aggressive properties of water. The presence of TiO2 was proved to enhance the permeate flux. During 200 h of SPMR‐DCMD operation the conductivity of the distillate did not exceed 3 μS cm−1 (vs. 0.1–0.5 mS cm−1 in feed), showing a high quality of the product. CONCLUSION The obtained results revealed a significant advantage of SPMR‐DCMD over the systems utilizing pressure‐driven membrane processes. Permeate quality was very high and no negative effect of the fouling layer on system performance was found. Moreover, the applied membrane exhibited very good stability during long‐term operation. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

As emerging pollutants, pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) have received extensive attention due to their high detection frequency (with concentrations ranging from ng/L to μg/L) and potential risk to aqueous environments and human health. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are effective techniques for the removal of PPCPs from water environments. In AOPs, different types of free radicals (HO·, SO4·−, O2·−, etc.) are generated to decompose PPCPs into non-toxic and small-molecule compounds, finally leading to the decomposition of PPCPs. This review systematically summarizes the features of various AOPs and the removal of PPCPs by different free radicals. The operation conditions and comprehensive performance of different types of free radicals are summarized, and the reaction mechanisms are further revealed. This review will provide a quick understanding of AOPs for later researchers.
