Pharmaceutical significance of Leuconostoc mesenteroides KS-TN11 isolated from Nile Tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus

Abstract: Aquatic animals are known for their myriad of beneficial bacteria with diverse biologically active compounds. The current study was aimed to isolate and characterize potentially beneficial lactic acid bacteria from Nile Tilapia and evaluate their pharmaceutical applications. The fish samples were dissected and stomach, intestine, and gills were collected and serially diluted for the isolation of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) on BCP agar media. Identification of isolate was carried by biochemical and molecular cha… Show more

“…However, LABs from camel milk are less explored for their health benefits. In mice [ 2 , 33 ], chicken [ 25 ], and humans [ 2 , 34 ], LAB probiotic strains have shown significant protection against a various number of infectious diseases [ 17 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 25 , 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 , 39 , 40 , 41 , 42 ]. Intranasal and oral pretreatment with LAB strains proved effective in protecting mice against influenza virus infection but did not protect against severe weight loss disease [ 43 , 44 ].…”

“…In comparison with previous studies carried out by researches, both of L. plantarum and L. mesenteroides have been isolated from fermented products, (Choi et al 2015;Oguntoyinbo and Narbad 2015;Berbegal et al 2016;Jimenez et al 2018;Lee and Kim 2019;Nurhikmayani et al 2019). Moreover, L. plantarum has also reported from digestive tracts of shrimp (Kongnum et al 2012), human breast milk (Jiang et al 2016) and Italian rye-grass (Vijayakumar et al 2015), whereas, genus of Leuconostoc mesenteroides mainly isolated from meat products (Kaihei et al 2011) and Oreochromis niloticus (Paray et al 2018).…”

“…The fermented camel milk was lightly homogenized for isolating lactic acid bacteria and then serially diluted from 10 −1 to 10 −6 using sterile phosphate buffer [ 41 , 42 ]. A 100 µL tube from each dilution was plated on BCP agar plates and incubated at 37 °C for 24 h to see the clear zone around the colonies.…”

“…The biochemical characterization of the strain was carried out using API 50CH strips supplied with API 50CHL medium. The protocol was followed as per the instructions provided by the manufacturer [ 41 , 44 , 45 , 46 ]. Additionally, the molecular characterization of GBUT-21 was conducted via 16S rRNA gene sequencing at Microgen, South Korea.…”
