Pharmaceutical Applications of Shellac: Moisture-Protective and Taste-Masking Coatings and Extended-Release Matrix Tablets

Abstract: Shellac is a natural polymer, which is used as enteric coating material in pharmaceutical applications. The major objective of the present study was to investigate the potential of shellac for other purposes, namely to provide moisture-protective and taste-masking coatings as well as extended-release matrix tablets. The efficiency of shellac to achieve moisture protection and taste masking was compared with that of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), which is most frequently used for these purposes. Shellac-… Show more

“…5 Phonograph records composed of shellac and fillers 6 were stamped using a metal stamp, 7 yielding lateral feature sizes in the order of tens of micrometers (see Figure 1). Today, shellac is used as a coating material for drug release 8,9 and is an approved food additive. 10,11 Additionally, shellac already was employed as a substrate and dielectric layer material in environmentally friendly transistors, because of its insulating properties and capability to form smooth surfaces.…”

“…3,4) Although powder or capsule dosage forms are also useful orally, they have the drawback of attaching to the throat or pharynx, indicating that tablets have superior usability; however, elderly people and children often have difficulty swallowing conventional tablets or capsules. 5) In particular, patients with oesophageal problems require oral dosage forms that can be swallowed more easily.…”
