“…Similarly, proteins, sugars and nucleic acids have been found to be phagostimulants for C. pipiens larvae (Dadd et al, 1982;Dadd & Kleinjan, 1985), and larvae of C. quinquefasciatus responded to proteins as well as to nucleotides (Barber et al, 1982(Barber et al, , 1983. albimanus larvae was induced by carbohydrates as well as proteins, and larvae rapidly ingested a broad variety of food materials.…”

“…With C.molestus, a single experiment was carried out with two replicates of each treatment for two fasting conditions, 3 h and 3 days. Effects on larval drinking of adenylic acid, a powerful phagostimulant of filter feeding for Cpipiens (Dadd et al, 1982), and of two colloids, agarose and methylcellulose, were examined towards the end of this work in many mainly small experiments as dictated by the availability of larvae. In these tests, glutted larvae that had fasted for 1-3 days were used.…”

“…This interpretation is reinforced by the stimulant effect on drinking in these two species (and tentatively in A.albimanm also) of low concentrations, M, of pure adenylic acid. For Cpipiens this substance is a potent phagostimulant that increases the rate of particulate ingestion during normal filter-feeding (Dadd & Kleinjan, 1982, 1985, and also aggregates larvae towards a source of the substance (Barber et al, 1982). Though no data are given in this paper, we have used the methods described by Dadd & Kleinjan (1970, 1985 to show that lo-' M adenylic acid increases the rate of particulate ingestion with all species used in this present study.…”

“…The mouthparts of larval Culex mosquitoes Þlter the water more actively in the presence of nutritive material than when such particles are absent (Rashed and Mulla 1989). Extracts of yeast and of nucleic acid seem to induce feeding behavior more effectively than do other materials that were tested (Dadd 1970, Dadd et al 1982, Dadd and Kleinjan 1985.
