pH-Responsive nanovalves based on encapsulated halloysite for the controlled release of a corrosion inhibitor in epoxy coating

Abstract: Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were applied as corrosion inhibitor (benzotriazole, BTA) hosts, which were encapsulated by using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and modified by (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES).

“…As can be seen in Fig. 2(a), the peaks at 3,960 cm -1 and 3,622 cm -1 were observed and referred to the stretching absorption of Al 2 OH, and the peak at 1,033 cm -1 corresponded to Si-O-Si groups [19,20]. The above peaks were shown at the same band position for both the HNTs and f-HNTs, indicating that the basic structure of f-HNTs was not changed after functionalization with APTES.…”

“…owing to their large available surface areas. Many types of nanocontainers have been explored by researchers to encapsulate inhibitors, such as carbon nanotubes, 15 halloysite nanotubes, 4,16 polymeric capsules, 17,18 and layered double hydroxides. 19 Among these, halloysite nanotubes are one of the most cost-effective because they are found naturally, inexpensive, and highly abundant nanostructures with a unique hollow lumen structure that is capable of high loading capacity.…”

“…Therefore, the effective encapsulation of corrosion inhibitor is required to control the release. There have been many reports on encapsulation of the corrosion inhibitors, where the release is triggered by pH [18][19][20] or crack. 21,22 Matsuda et al has synthesized pH-sensitive microcapsules with a shell composed of ester chains with the ability to be hydrolyzed in both alkaline and acidic, which can form oxide layer on the steel substrate.…”
