pH-responsive hydrogels of carboxymethyl cellulose and polyethyleneimine for efficient removal of ionic dye molecules

Abstract: A carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/polyethyleneimine (PEI) hybrid hydrogel was successfully prepared under green processing conditions. The CMC and PEI formed a polyelectrolyte complex, and the three-dimensional (3D) network structure was hardened by chemical crosslinking, resulting in suitable hydrogel properties. In the prepared CMC/PEI polyelectrolyte hydrogel, the surface charge was easily switched according to the pH change, and the resulting swelling and contraction was reversible. The pH sensitivity of the… Show more

“…In an acidic pH medium, most of the carboxylate anions were protonated. Meanwhile, a stronger intermolecular hydrogen bond was formed between the cellulose chains and the PHEMA network, which induced the contraction of the IPN hydrogel and the expulsion of the water molecules [ 54 , 55 ].…”

“…Therefore, targeting the adsorption of both cationic as well as anionic dyes using a single adsorbent is a quite challenge. This limitation can be overcome by using different approaches such as; (a) a combination of cationic and anionic polysaccharides in the hydrogel synthesis-based matrices or composite adsorbents 22 27 , (b) modification of the chemical structure by grafting and formation of composites 28 30 , (c) formation of composite using inorganic materials 31 , and (d) Formation of ampholytes 32 34 .…”
