pH of bulk precipitation during 3 consecutive annual courses in the Trachypogon savannas of the Orinoco Llanos, Venezuela

Abstract: Bulk precipitation was daily collected and individual pH measured at the Trachypogon savannas, Venezuela, over a consecutive 3‐year period. The volume‐weighted mean pH as calculated, were 5.8, 5.6 and 5.8 for 1981, 1982 and 1983, respectively. The annual variation of pH ranged from 4.9 to 6.9; 4.8 to 6.3 and 5.4 to 6.8 units in 1981, 1982 and 1983, respectively. However, in this savanna area, which is relatively remote from heavy sources of industrial pollution, the annual proportion of daily rains with pH < 5… Show more

“…In the more industrialised, northern part of Venezuela, highly acidic precipitation as a consequence of sugarcane burning [15,16] or industrial activity [16] have been reported. However, measurements of pH in Mantecal rain water were not particularly low, ranging from 5.1 at the end of the wet season (November) to 5.8 at the beginning of the wet season (Table 2), a value similar to that reported by Montes et al [17] for the Trachypogon savannas of the Orinoco River.…”

“…A standard rainwater gauge was placed in the centre of the same. The system for sample collection has been described in detail by Montes et al (1985), with the following characteristics: the containers remained open throughout the study period; the samples include a combination of wet precipitation and dry deposition, defined as bulk precipitation (Whitehead & Feth 1964).…”

“…6 and 5.8 for 1981, 1982 and 1983, respectively. Therefore, with the exception of values given by Montes et al (1985) for a savannah site, rainfall pH in rural sites of tropical America is around or below 5.0. In the present paper, in samples strictly collected by events, rainfall pH values are reported for three sites of the Venezuelan savannah.…”

“…The only values reported for a savannah site correspond to bulk deposition samples collected at Calabozo, Venezuela (Montes et al, 1985). The volume-weighted mean pH's reported were 5.8, 5.…”
