Abstract: This study suggests that taurine prevents obesity in MSG-treated rats and may be closely associated with energy metabolism.

“…In addition, taurine increased mRNA expression of their target genes, including lipoprotein lipase, acyl‐CoA oxidase, acyl‐CoA synthetase, and medium‐chain acyl‐CoA dehydrogenase. Similarly, taurine supplementation administered to MSG‐induced obese rats reduced body fat and improved lipid metabolism . These effects of taurine were associated with elevated body temperatures, increased brown adipose tissues, and increased PGC‐1α levels.…”

“…Taurine, a mammalian amino acid, was shown to protect neurons from glutamate cytotoxicity, maintain MMP, and reduce ROS in SH-SY5Y cells [222]. Taurine also protected mitochondria by activating Akt-CREB-peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma co-activator 1-α (PGC1α) pathway [223,224,225]. In prenatally-stressed (PS) rats that had defects in learning and memory, taurine reduced mitochondrial ROS, restored MMP, COX, ATP, and SOD2, and increased Akt-CREB signaling pathway and PGC1α expression in the hippocampi [223].…”

“…Lin et al [13] indicated that taurine treatment attenuates the infiltration of adipose tissue by macrophages and modulates the phenotype of macrophages, which suggest that taurine is a valuable food constituent with a potential to attenuate chronic inflammation in adipose tissue and improve obesityrelated insulin resistance. Cao et al [14] suggested that taurine prevents obesity in monosodium glutamate (MSG)-treated rats and may be closely associated with energy metabolism.…”
