PGC-1.ALPHA. mRNA Level and Oxidative Capacity of the Plantaris Muscle in Rats with Metabolic Syndrome, Hypertension, and Type 2 Diabetes

Abstract: We examined the fiber profiles and the mRNA levels of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARα and PPARδ/β) and of the PPARγ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α) in the plantaris muscles of 15-week-old control (WR), metabolic syndrome (CP), hypertensive (SHR), and type 2 diabetic (GK) rats. The deep regions in the muscles of SHR and GK rats exhibited lower percentages of high-oxidative type I and IIA fibers and higher percentages of low-oxidative type IIB fibers compared with WR and CP rats. The surface regions i… Show more

“…We have previously reported that the soleus muscles in rats with type 2 diabetes contain lower levels of PGC-1a mRNA than those in non-diabetic rats [16,17]. Therefore, we concluded that low PGC-1a mRNA levels in the soleus muscles in rats with type 2 diabetes are associated with a low percentage of high-oxidative fibers.…”

“…PGC-1α mRNA levels in the vastus lateralis muscle are lower in patients with type 2 diabetes than in healthy individuals 62) . Lower PGC-1α mRNA levels in the soleus and plantaris muscles of GK rats are associated with lower oxidative capacity in those muscles and a fiber profile comprising only lowoxidative type I fibers in the soleus muscle 33,44) . It is concluded that reduced PGC-1α mRNA levels in the skeletal muscles of rats with type 2 diabetes are associated with a lower proportion of high-oxidative fibers.…”
