Eclogite is first discovered from Qiangtang area, central Tibet, which occurs as a lens in the high-pressure metamorphic belt comprising glaucophane-muscovite schist and garnet-muscovite schist, along the south margin of Lungmu Co-Shuanghu Paleo-Tethys suture. A glaucophane 40 Ar/ 39 Ar age of 220 Ma and a phengite 40 Ar/ 39 Ar age of 221.9 Ma have been obtained from blueschists associated with eclogite. The rock consists of garnet, omphacite, amphibole, phengite, and rutile, etc, and the jadeite content in omphacite ranges from 32.7% to 38.95%. It is estimated that the temperature of the eclogite is <500℃ and pressure varies in the range of 1.56-2.35 GPa. The discovery of Qiangtang ecologite further supports that there is a suture zone of IndoChinese epoch in central Qiangtang area, and is very important for discssing the evolution of the paleo-ocean and paleo-plate tectonics in this area.

In order to constrain the formation time of high-grade metamorphic rocks in the Qilian Mountains, U-Pb zircon dating was carried out by using LA-ICPMS technique for a paragneiss of the Hualong Group in the Qilian Mountains basement series and a weakly foliated granite that intruds into the Hualong Group. Zircons from the paragneiss consist dominantly of detrital magma zircons with round or sub-round shape. They have 207 Pb/ 206 Pb ages mostly ranging from 880 to 900 Ma, with a weighted mean age of 891 ±9 Ma, which is interpreted as the magma crystallization age of its igneous provenance and can be taken as a lower age limit for the Hualong Group. Magma crystallization age for the weak-foliated granite is 875±8 Ma, which can be taken as an upper age limit for the Hualong Group. Accordingly, the formation time of the Hualong Group is constrained at sometime between 875 and 891 Ma. A few zircons from both paragneiss and weak-foliated granite display old inherited ages of 1000 to 1700 Ma and young metamorphic ages of Early Paleozoic. The zircon age distribution pattern confirms that the Qilian Mountains and the northern margin of Qaidam Basin had a united basement, with geotectonic affinity to the Yangtze Block. The results also reveal that sediments of the Hualong Group formed by rapid accumulation due to rapid crustal uplift-erosion. This process may result from intensive Neoproterozoic orogenesis due to assembly of the suppercontinent Rodinia.

Single-grain detrital muscovite Rb-Sr isotopic composition as an indicator of provenance for the Carboniferous sedimentary rocks in northern Dabie, China

Low-grade metamorphic Paleozoic sedimentary rocks are exposed along the northern margin of the Qinling-Dabie orogenic belt that formed by the collision of the North and South China blocks during the Early Mesozoic. Geological provenance and tectonic setting of these low-grade sedimentary rocks are strongly debated. Recent studies have shown that they contain Paleozoic, Late Proterozoic and Late Archean detrital zircons, which points to an origin from different sources including rocks from the South and North China blocks. This study presents single-grain mineral Rb-Sr results for detrital muscovites and biotites from Carboniferous sedimentary sequences of the Beihuaiyang low-grade metamorphic zone exposed along the northern margin of the Dabie Mountains. About 15% of detrital muscovite grains are phengitic in composition with high Si/Al ratios of >3.3. Single grain Rb-Sr isotopic analyses show that both muscovites and phengites give a pooled age of about 420 Ma, implying Middle Paleozoic thermal and high-pressure metamorphic events in the source area(s). Rb-Sr isotopic evidence from detrital biotites suggests at least two different sedimentary sources of old crustal rocks and juvenile material. The latter probably comprised magmatic rocks related to the Paleozoic convergence along the southern margin of the North China block. Whole-rock Sm-Nd isotopic composition of the sedimentary rocks also demonstrates a mixture of sedimentary sources of different ages that confirm conclusions proposed previously from evidence of detrital zircon ages. We conclude that the Paleozoic detrital phengites originate from Paleozoic subduction and subsequent collision proposed for the North Qinling terrane. Our study shows that, single-grain detrital mica Rb-Sr isotopic characteristics can be a potential indicator for the provenance of geological complex terranes.
