Petrology and geodynamic significance of the Tertiary alkaline lavas from the Kahuzi–Biega region, Western Rift, Kivu, Zaire

Abstract: The youngest volcanic flows in the Kahuzi–Biega region of the Western Rift, are made up of ankaratrites, alkaline basalts, basanites, and hawaiites, belonging to a Na‐rich alkaline suite. These lavas are closely associated with marginal faults and their development can be related to the early stages of formation of the rift. Thus, the geochronological age of ca. 6 Ma for this alkaline lava suite provides a constraint on the early events in the evolution of the western branch of the East African Rift system.

“…However, it should be noted that these are Pliocene-Pleistocene grabens situated between the Miocene basins of Lake Tanganyika, to the south, and Mwutan Nzige (Lake Albert) to the north (Lubala et al 1987). Thus the tholeiitic/transitional basalts of Virunga, Bukavu and Mwenga-Kamituga can be shown to have preceded the individualization of their respective grabens.…”
