Petrology and geochronology of the volcaniclastic and volcanogenic Mesozoic Loch Burn Formation in eastern Fiordland, New Zealand

Abstract: The Loch Burn Formation in eastern Fiordland is the metamorphosed and eroded effusive product of a long-lived Jurassic to Early Cretaceous volcanic arc. Relict sedimentary features within meta-volcaniclastic components indicate sedimentation in a mostly terrestrial or shallow-water environment that was fed by debris flows from proximal granitic and volcanic high points.

“…Cambrian magmatism, metamorphism and deformation in Fiordland and NW Nelson have been cited as evidence for RossDelamerian orogenesis (Gibson & Ireland 1996;Jongens et al 2003;Gutjahr et al 2006;Bradshaw 2007;Scott et al 2008;Allibone et al 2009 (Stump 1995;Foden et al 2002; 190 CJ Adams et al (Stump 1995). Rapid exhumation of the RossDelamerian Orogen provided voluminous sediment detritus for the Ordovician-Silurian flysch to the east, widespread across the Lachlan Orogen in Victoria and New South Wales (VandenBerg & Stewart 1992;Turner et al 1996;) and also in Northern Victoria Land (Robertson Bay Terrane) and Marie Byrd Land (Swanson Formation).…”

“…The new la-icP-MS data reported here contribute to a growing database of U-Pb zircon ages from the plutonic rocks of eastern Fiordland (Kimbrough et al 1994;Muir et al 1998;Scott et al 2008;Bolhar et al 2008). Figure 5 illustrates that this area records a carboniferous dioritic and granitic magmatic phase followed by quiescence until the emplacement of Jurassic to Early cretaceous dioritic and granitic plutons of the Darran/Median Suite (including the Hunter intrusives and Fowler Pluton).…”

“…The presence of a similar narrow belt of loch Burn Formation and largs Group volcanic rocks in eastern Fiordland, and at Port craig on the south coast of the South Island ( Fig. 1) (King 1984;Turnbull & uruski 1995;ewing et al 2007;Scott et al 2008), implies that these Jurassic basins may have formed a semi-continuous belt up to several hundreds of kilometres in length (Fig. 1).…”
