Petrology and Geochemistry of Nauru Basin Igneous Complex: Large-Volume, Off-Ridge Eruptions of MORB-Like Basalt during the Cretaceous

Abstract: The 16 samples of Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Leg 89 basalts that we analyzed for whole rock major and trace elements and for mineralogic compositions are identical to some of the basalts recovered during Leg 61. Leg 89 samples are mostly olivine-plagioclase-clinopyroxene sparsely phyric basalts and exhibit a wide variety of textures. These basalts have lower TiO 2 at a given Mg/(Mg + Fe 2 +) × 100 than MO RB (midocean ridge basalt). We recognize three major chemical types of basalts in the Nauru Basin. W… Show more

“…Site 802 tholeiites are directly comparable to those of transitional MORB from certain sections of the ocean ridge such as the Reykjanes Ridge and the Costa Rica Rift. In these regards, Site 802 tholeiites are geochemically similar to the tholeiitic basalts recovered at DSDP Site 462 in the Nauru Basin (Larson, Schlanger, et al, 1981;Moberly, Schlanger, et al, 1986;Floyd, 1989;Castillo et al, 1986. The similarity is even more striking because of their identical Sr and Nd isotopic compositions (Fig.…”

“…Earlier, we have proposed that the Site 462 tholeiites in the Nauru Basin were erupted along an ocean ridge system that propagated into or was formed in the preexisting Jurassic basement when this basement drifted near the intensely volcanically active south central Pacific region during the Cretaceous (Castillo et al, 1986.…”

“…Basalts that are very similar in age and chemical and isotopic composition to those from OJP were recovered from EMB to the north of OJP and NB to the east of OJP, at ODP Hole 802A and DSDP Hole 462A, respectively (Figure 1) [ Castillo et al , 1986]. EMB basalts are dated at 114.6 ± 3.2 Ma [ Castillo et al , 1994], while those of NB yielded ages of 110.8 ± 1.0 Ma [ Castillo et al , 1991].…”
