To investigate the crustal magnetic structure, it is important to assess the susceptibility and remanence properties of rocks and ores. In this paper, we propose a method to extract the contributions of induced and remanent magnetization from modeling of magnetic anomalies. We first estimate the direction of the total magnetization vector by studying the reduced‐to‐pole anomaly and its correlation with different magnitude magnetic transforms. Then we invert the magnetic data to obtain the volumetric distribution of the magnetization intensity. As the third step, based on a priori information about the Koenigsberger ratio derived from petrophysical measurements, we extract the distributions in the source volume of the induced and remanent magnetization intensities, based on a generalized relationship involving the total and remanent magnetizations, and the true susceptibility. In this way, we are able to produce separate maps of the anomaly fields attributed to the physical magnetic source parameters: remanent and induced magnetization. After validating the method with synthetic data, we analyze the data relative to the Mesozoic and Cenozoic igneous rocks in Yeshan region, eastern China. The analysis of the separated magnetization components reveals that the intrusion of dioritic and basaltic rocks occurred at different geological periods, and the basaltic rocks were magnetized by a reversed geomagnetic field. The uncertainty analysis shows that a larger Koenigsberger ratio is beneficial to extract more reliable remanence and susceptibility information.

Low‐δ26Mg basalts are commonly interpreted to represent melts derived from carbonated mantle sources. The mantle domain feeding low‐δ26Mg Cenozoic basalts in eastern China overlaps the so‐called Big Mantle Wedge (BMW) above the stagnant Pacific slab in the mantle transition zone, which indicates that the BMW is an important carbon reservoir generated by the slab. However, Mg isotopic composition in the nearby mantle beyond the BMW and, thus, the spatial extent of carbonated components in the mantle beneath eastern Asia have not yet been extensively characterized. Therefore, it remains largely unconstrained if additional or alternative carbon reservoirs exist. Here we carried out a geochemical study on Cenozoic Huihe nephelinites, which crop out ~500 km west of the present‐day BMW. These rocks are characterized by negative K, Zr, Hf, and Ti anomalies, high Zr/Hf, Ca/Al ratios, and low δ26Mg values, which suggest that they are derived from a carbonated mantle source. The composition of the nephelinites demonstrates that low δ26Mg mantle components exist at significant distances from the present‐day BMW, which highlights that in addition to the stagnant Pacific slab, other oceanic slab(s) also contribute(s) carbonate‐bearing crustal materials to the mantle sources of Cenozoic volcanism in eastern Asia.

New images of shear wave velocity (VS) structure of the crust and uppermost mantle in the Shandong province of China are presented based on inversion of ambient seismic noise data from 47 broadband stations. Interstation Rayleigh wave phase‐velocity dispersion curves for periods of 1–40 s are obtained from noise cross correlations between stations. Two‐dimensional phase‐velocity maps at periods of 5–30 s are obtained by tomographic inversion of these dispersion curves, which are then inverted for 3‐D Vs heterogeneity to ~80‐km depth. Our results show clear indications of Moho uplift and crustal thinning beneath the northern segment of the Yishu fault zone and the Jiaobei uplift, thus providing seismological evidence for the steep geometry and deep penetration of the fault system. Instead of large‐scale, low‐velocity anomalies beneath eastern China as imaged by previous regional tomography, our high‐resolution Vs results reveal fine‐scale focused low‐velocity anomalies beneath the isolated Cenozoic basalts. There are strong spatial correlations between the narrow low Vs zones in the uppermost mantle and the thinned crust, as well as the locations of the isolated Cenozoic volcanism in the study area. Our results suggest that the asthenosphere upwelling possibly originating from the stagnant Pacific slab is focused into localized features at 50‐ to 80‐km depth that supply the isolated Cenozoic volcanoes of the eastern China continental margin.
