Petrological Meaning of Ethnostratigraphic Units: Laminated Limestone of the Crato Formation, Araripe Basin, NE Brazil

Abstract: Crato Formation, NE Brazil, consists of laminated limestones deposited in a lacustrine environment during the Early Cretaceous. The Nova Olinda Member, the lowest unit of the Crato Formation, is world-famous for their exceptionally well-preserved fossils. The Nova Olinda limestones have been economically exploited for centuries. Today, this commercial excavation still represents the main economic activity in the region. During the mining process, the quarry workers have developed an informal stratigraphic code… Show more

“…According to these authors, these layers are more fossiliferous in the Nova Olinda region, where they crop out on quarry fronts. Recently, Corecco et al (2022) reported an interval informally named by quarry workers as 'veio do besouro', from which most Crato mineralized insects are recovered. This interval corresponds to the uppermost part of the Nova Olinda Member.…”

“…Considering the preservational status of the fossil material, the specimen probably came from the uppermost part of the interval II proposed by Varejão et al (2019). This interval consists of yellow to red-colored laminites and corresponds to an interval informally named by Corecco et al (2022) as…”
