For experiments concerning the formation of oil-suspended particulate matter (SPM) aggregates (OSA), oil and sediment samples were collected from Campos Basin and six stations of Paraguaçu estuary, Todos os Santos Bay, Brazil, respectively. The sediments samples were analyzed for organic matter determined by the EMBRAPA method, nitrogen determined by the Kjeldahl method, and phosphorus determined by the method described by Aspila. The oil trapped in OSA was extracted following the method described by Moreira. The experiment showed a relationship between the amount of organic matter and OSA formation and consequently the dispersion of the studied oil. On the basis of the buoyancy of OSA and the ecotoxicological effects on pelagic and benthic community, the priority areas for application of remediation techniques are Cachoeira, Maragogipe, and Salinas da Margarida because of the large amount of oil that accumulated at the bottom of the experiment flask (5.85%, 27.95%, and 38,98%; 4.2%, 17.66%, and 32.64%; and 11.82%, 8.07%, and 10.91% respectively).

Part of the contaminants that reach the estuaries are deposited in sediments. These compounds may affect survival, fecundity and development of benthic organisms. This study aimed to evaluate the toxicity of the surface sediments from the Capibaribe Estuarine System (CES) on benthic copepod Tisbe biminiensis. Sediment samples were collected in five stations of the CES. Dissolved/dispersed petroleum hydrocarbons (DDPHs) was measured in bottom water samples from the same sites, to estimate the recent input of such compounds. Sub-lethal effects on T. biminiensis were observed for samples collected in front of the Harbor of Recife, in the northern mouth of the Capibaribe River and in the upper portion of the estuary. The DDPHs concentrations recorded in the CES suggest chronic contamination and pointed out the domestic and industrial effluents, and harbor activities, as the main source to this system.

The aim of the current study was to evaluate the productive capacity of the phytoplankton community and other environmental variables in the estuarine area of Suape; while considering the constant morphological, sedimentological and hydrological changes, the site has been facing due to the implementation and expansion of an industrial and port complex. The study comprised 6 campaigns: 3 in the dry season and 3 in the rainy season. Water samples were collected from the surface layer of the internal and external portions of the estuarine bay during low spring tides. The salinity ranged from 32.20 to 37.10, the water temperature ranged from 26.60˚C to 29.40˚C, and the oxygen saturation rate ranged from 58.5% to 114.5%. There was significant seasonal variation. The nitrite concentration was higher during the rainy season, whereas the ammonia concentration was higher during the dry season; the higher ammonia concentration helped increase chlorophyll-a levels and rates of primary productivity, which ranged from 0.02-2.45 mg•m −3 and from 0.34 to 4.32 mg•C•m −3 •h −1 , respectively. Chlorophyll-a < 20 μm was the fraction of biomass most commonly present in the estuarine ecosystem, accounting for 88.6% of the chlorophyll-a-containing biomass, and this reflected the low nutrient content in the water and indicated that the area was free from eutrophication processes. The decrease of rainfall during the sampling months and the anthropogenic changes in the environment led to reduced continental contributions, increased marine interference, nutrient dilution and loss of phytoplankton production capacity in Suape Bay, which severely damaged other trophic links in the ecosystem.
