Petroleum geology: 3D reservoir modelling in the central Gulf of Suez, Egypt, to estimate the hydrocarbon possibility via petrophysical analysis and seismic data interpretation

Abstract: October oil field is considered one of the most prolific areas in the central Gulf of Suez, which recently suffered a lack of production in some areas, in addition to some wells that have begun to deplete, which negatively affects the economic value of this field. 3D integrated reservoir model on five wells has been performed to simulate the subsurface structural setting, petrophysical modelling, and distribution of facies modelling of the Late Cretaceous Matulla Formation and Early Miocene Asl Member of Upper… Show more

“…Integrated analysis of source rock evaluation and basin modelling has emerged as a powerful approach in unravelling the hydrocarbon potential in specific basins or fields. This approach combines geological, geochemical and geophysical data to assess the effectiveness of source rocks in generating hydrocarbons, determine the quality and quantity of organic matter and simulate the evolution of the basin over time (Abd-Allah et al, 2019;Gawad et al, 2021aGawad et al, , 2021bMakky et al, 2014).…”

“…Additionally, numerous formations act as source rocks based on subsurface geologic settings and F I G U R E 1 (a) 2D map illustrating the main E-W sedimentary basin and major tectonics in the North Western Desert, Egypt (modified after Bayoumi, 1996), (b) location map of the study area, illustrating the Karam and Assil oil concessions and the selected studied wells (GPAA-4 and ASSIL-1X wells), Abu Gharadig Basin, northern Western Desert, Egypt. geochemical analysis parameters, including the Oligocene Dabaa Formation, Lower Eocene Apollonia Formation, Late Cretaceous ARD and ARF members, Late Cretaceous Upper Bahariya Formation, Early Cretaceous Kharita and Dahab shale formations (Abdel-Fattah et al, 2018;Gawad et al, 2019;Mamdouh et al, 2023;Reda et al, 2022;Sarhan et al, 2017;Shehata et al, 2023). Notably, the Jurassic Khatatba shales are believed to be the primary source of hydrocarbons, predominantly free gas with minor associated condensates (Abdel-Fattah, 2015;Gawad et al, 2021a;Gawad et al, 2021b;Reda et al, 2022).…”

“…Such data can help to improve hydrocarbon reserve estimates and field development plans (Ali et al, 2022; Islam et al, 2021; Zhang et al, 2022). Although 3D structural modelling in oil reservoirs is simple using various available software, the modelling accuracy remains a significant challenge that has a significant impact on the effective development of hydrocarbon accumulation (Abdel‐Fattah et al, 2018; Ali et al, 2022; Gawad et al, 2021; Othman et al, 2021).…”
