Petroleomics by Direct Analysis in Real Time-Mass Spectrometry

Abstract: Abstract. The analysis of crude oil and its fractions by applying ambient ionization techniques remains underexplored in mass spectrometry (MS). Direct analysis in real time (DART) in the positive-ion mode was coupled to a linear quadrupole ion trap Orbitrap mass spectrometer (LTQ Orbitrap) to analyze crude oil, paraffin samples, and porphyrin standard compounds. The ionization parameters of DART-MS were optimized for crude oil analysis. DART-MS rendered the optimum conditions of the operation using paper as t… Show more

“…[17][18][19][20][21][22] The tandem mass spectrometry (MS 2 ) experiments were performed on a quadrupole coupled to an FT-ICR mass spectrometer, Q-FT-ICR MS. APCI(+)MS/MS experiments were performed using collision energies of 15-30% for the ions of m/z 561, 589, 603, 645, 673, and 701, and 0-30% for the two PAH commercial standards (ions of m/z 229 and 301). 23 The resolving power (m/∆m 50% from 420,000 to 530,000, where m corresponds to m/z 400 and ∆m 50% is the full peak width at half-maximum peak height) and mass accuracy lower than 1-3 ppm provided the unambiguous molecular formula assignments for all singly charged molecular ions. The mass spectra were acquired and then processed with a custom algorithm specifically developed for petroleum data using the Composer software package.…”

“…Like the DESI method, DART does not require a time-consuming preparation step and presents the advantages of limited matrix effect, no solvent or additive use, and low adduct formation. 29 Although this method has been used successfully in numerous applications such as forensics, 30,31 water analysis, 32 petroleomic analysis 33 or online aerosol analysis, 34,35 to our knowledge, no communication has yet been published about the analysis of filter-collected SOAs by DART-HRMS using an untargeted approach. Herein we present a description and characterization of DART ionization combined with HRMS and an untargeted approach for the chemical characterization of SOAs.…”

“…When the DART source is coupled to different mass spectrometers, it provides a rapid MS analysis of a wide range of compounds [3539], where its mechanism and applications are described elsewhere and summarized in a couple of reviewpapers [33,34]. In this study DART-MS is introduced for the first time to measure the presence of bacterial endotoxin in OVD materials, including sodium hyaluronate (NaHA) [40], perfluoro- n -octane (PFO) [41,42], and silicone oil (SO) [43,44].…”
