Petrographic characteristics of intrusive rocks as an evaluation tool of their technical properties

Abstract: The main petrographic variables of intrusive rocks that influence the technical test methods common used within the aggregate industry were identified and evaluated, the aim being to investigate whether petrographic description could be used as a tool for the preliminary quality evaluation of different rock groups. Evaluation of the dependence of the technical test methods on petrographic variables covered 26 intrusive rocks, including some of their altered varieties (orthogneisses), divided into two groups: 1… Show more

“…statue) in a certain environment over a desired period of time (the concept of design life). Understanding the complexity of relationships between various petrographical characteristics and physical and/or technological properties is important to secure the stability and proper function of the construction and also to provide sufficient durability (Calia et al 2015;Johansson et al 2015;Modestou et al 2015;Vázquez et al 2015). “…In ballast petrographic test, by identifying inherent physical properties of the parent rocks and minerals in ballast aggregate and estimating percentage composition, it is capable to map rock source based on the classification and mineralogy, evaluate chemical activities, and provide the clues of the susceptibility to weathering, soundness, hardness and toughness properties (Johansson, Lukschová et al 2011).…”
