Petrogenesis and Tectonic Implications of the Latest Cretaceous Intrusive Rocks from the Eastern Gangdese Belt, Southeast Tibet

Abstract: The latest Cretaceous magmatic activity in the eastern segment of the Lhasa terrane provides important insights for tracking the magma source and geodynamic setting of the eastern Gangdese batholith, eastward of eastern Himalayan Syntaxis. Detailed petrological, geochemical and geochronological studies of the intrusive rocks (monzodiorites and granodiorites) of the eastern Gangdese batholith are presented with monzodiorites and granodiorites giving zircon U–Pb crystallization dates of 70–66 Ma and 71–66 Ma wit… Show more

“…The continued subduction led to a transition from Neo-Tethyan oceanic flat subduction to slab rollback beneath the eastern Gangdese in the Late Cretaceous (ca. 71-66 Ma;Chen et al, 2021). After that, the Indo-Asian collision initiated at ca.…”

“…range of zircon ε Hf (t) values (−22 to 0.39, concentrated between −12.85 and −5.73) of other quartz porphyry samples (Tian et al, 2019). Such large variation of ε Hf (t) values are better interpreted by the mixing of juvenile crust-derived melts and ancient crustal materials (e.g., Zhu et al, 2011;Xu et al, 2021;Chen et al, 2022). Therefore, the Bangbule quartz porphyry was derived from the partial melting of middle-upper crust and the components of juvenile mafic lower crust might have been added into the source region.…”

“…The Lhasa Block was separated into two units: (i) the southern unit, as represented by the Gangdese batholith, which consists of Triassic to Eocene arc-type magmatism (Zhu et al, 2009;Ji et al, 2009Ji et al, , 2012Ma et al, 2017; Wen et al, 2021;Zhou et al, 2021;Chen et al, 2022); and (ii) a northern plutonic suite, which was formed during the Cretaceous (Zhu et al, 2011). The northern plutonic suite may extend eastwards to join the Bomi-Chayu plutons (Lin et al, 2009(Lin et al, , 2019, then southwards to the Tengchong block (Lee et al, 2003;Chiu et al, 2009;Qi et al, 2015).…”
