Petri net-based process monitoring: a workflow management system for process modelling and monitoring

Abstract: Nowadays business process management is becoming a fundamental piece in many industrial processes. To manage the evolution and the interactions of the business actions it is important to accurately model the steps to follow and the resources needed by a process. Workflows provide a way of describing the order of execution and the dependencies between the constituting activities of business processes. Workflow monitoring can help to improve and to avoid delays on industrial environments where concurrent process… Show more

“…Researchers have explored the opportunity to formalize models in business process management, an established field in information systems research, as there is a need for a modeling language for business processes that is formal enough and understandable by end users, not just by domain experts [128], which can transform them into a form that is executable by computer engines. Information systems have constructed effective modeling languages that have been successfully executed in various tools and engines, such as Coloured Petri nets [129,130], Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) [131], Integration Definition for Function Modeling (IDEF0) [132], Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) [128], and System Modeling Language (SysML) [133].…”

“…Previous work in the area of Petri net applications was mainly done for modelling in the industrial and communication domains with a focus on verification of hardware and software, analysing behavioural features of interactions in multi-agent systems, model checking of coordination protocols, as well as facilitating and monitoring of technological processes [5,14,21,28,35,36].…”

“…In this line, a framework for the use of reverse multi-attribute auctions for resource allocation in business processes is proposed (Talluri and Ragatz, 2004). Following the work of these researches, we illustrate and test our mechanism in the workflow management domain (Pla et al, 2012a).…”
